Komodo Dragons (Komodo Island, Rinca)
Open year-round (closed 1–2 days/year for census). Dragons are more active in the morning regardless of season. No meaningful seasonal difference in sightings.
Kelimutu sunrise
Best May–October when skies are clear at 5 AM. Wet season: the lake colors change more dramatically (chemical reactions from rain runoff) but visibility is uncertain. Arrive regardless, even a partially cloudy sunrise with colored lakes is spectacular.
Liveaboard Lombok–Komodo
Run April–October reliably. November–March: still operating but expect rougher passages and some cancellations. Crossing the Sape Strait in December–January can involve 3–5 meter swells.
Wae Rebo Village trek
Accessible year-round, but the 4-hour uphill trek is miserable in heavy rain and the mountain fog is thick November–March. May–October gives you the best chance of clear mountain views and a dry trail.
Diving Komodo
Best May–November. April is excellent. December–March: possible but visibility reduced, currents less predictable.
Which Month Is the Best Value?
If you want good weather and low prices, May and October are the answer.
May is the first month of dry season. Seas calm down quickly after April. Labuan Bajo is quiet after Easter. Liveaboard prices are often 20-30% lower than August. Dragon sightings are reliable, manta rays are active, and you won’t be fighting for space on Padar’s ridge.
October is similar: dry season wrapping up, tourists mostly gone, prices dropping. Western Flores stays dry; eastern Flores (Maumere, Larantuka) gets some rain but nothing serious.
April is underrated: often excellent for diving (calm water, good visibility), dramatic at Kelimutu (wet season chemistry on the lakes with sometimes-clearing skies), and very quiet.
September is slightly busier than May or October but still significantly quieter than August, with nearly identical weather.
What Is the Difference in Weather Between Western and Eastern Flores?
Flores is a long island (350 km) and the monsoon doesn’t hit uniformly. The rain patterns are distinct by region:
Western Flores (Labuan Bajo, Ruteng): Dry season is very reliable May-October. Wet season is heavy November-April, with the worst rains December-February.
Central Flores (Bajawa, Ende, Moni): The highlands moderate the temperature year-round (always cooler). Rainfall is less predictable; the wet season is intense but shorter.

Kelimutu: The crater lakes are actually most chemically active in the wet season (rain runoff changes the lake chemistry), and the colors can be particularly vivid. The risk is cloud cover that obscures the view. Stay two nights in Moni and improve your odds.
Wae Rebo: The trek is miserable in heavy rain. If you visit December-February, check conditions with your guesthouse before committing.
