Flores in 3 Days: The Short-Stay Itinerary
· flores, itinerary, komodo, labuan-bajo, padar, 3-days
Quick answer: Three days in Flores means Komodo National Park from a Labuan Bajo base. Day 1: arrive and explore the harbour. Day 2: full park day with a dragon trek and Pink Beach or Padar Island. Day 3: sunrise hike or departure. Budget USD 130–300 per person, excluding flights.
Three days in Flores means Komodo. The rest of the island, Wae Rebo, Bajawa, Kelimutu, the overland route, requires time you don’t have on a short visit. But Komodo National Park, Padar Island, and Labuan Bajo add up to a genuinely worthwhile 3-day trip if you plan it right.
This itinerary assumes you arrive at Labuan Bajo (LBJ) airport and depart from the same. Adjust the timing around your actual flights.
Day 1, Arrive, Orient, Sunset
Morning/afternoon: Arrive at Komodo Airport (LBJ). If your flight arrives early, check in and drop luggage, then walk the waterfront. Labuan Bajo is small, 15 minutes covers the main strip. Find your dive shop or tour operator (if you haven’t booked in advance, afternoon is a good time to walk the harbour and compare day trip prices).
Afternoon logistics: Book your Komodo National Park day trip for tomorrow if not already done. The Labuan Bajo harbour is lined with operators, look for boats departing at 07:00–08:00 and covering Komodo Island + Pink Beach (or Rinca Island + Padar, depending on the operator route). Confirm whether Padar Island is included or separate.
Late afternoon: Walk up to Puncak Waringin viewpoint, 10 minutes from the waterfront, no entrance fee, excellent panorama of the harbour and surrounding islands as the light drops. This is a legitimate sunset spot and far less effort than Padar Island.
Evening: Dinner on the waterfront. Fresh grilled fish is the move, restaurants along Jl. Soekarno-Hatta grill fish by weight; walk in, pick your fish, negotiate the price, wait 20 minutes.
Where to stay: Town centre guesthouses are most practical for early morning harbour departures. See Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo →.
Day 2, Komodo National Park Full Day
06:00: Wake up. The boat leaves at 07:00–08:00; the harbour is 5–15 minutes walk from most town centre accommodation.
07:00: Board. Most day trips follow a similar route, the order varies by operator and tides:
Komodo Island, dragon trek (2–3 hours)
The main event. Your boat pulls into Loh Liang, you pay the entrance fee (or your operator collects it for you), and a ranger leads your group on a 1–2 hour trail through dry savanna. You will see Komodo dragons, usually within 20–30 minutes. Adults can exceed 3 metres and 70 kilograms. The ranger carries a forked stick; this is not decorative.
Short trek (1km loop): 45–60 minutes, sees the main resting areas near the ranger post. Long trek (varies): adds the forest interior, higher chance of seeing dragons in natural hunting behaviour. Choose based on your group’s fitness and the heat.
Pink Beach, snorkelling (1.5–2 hours)
Pink Beach (Pantai Merah) is approximately what the name suggests, sand tinted pink from coral fragments, with a coral garden 10–30 metres offshore at snorkelling depth. The beach itself is for swimming and lounging; the water is calm here compared to open-water sites.
Snorkelling gear is included with most day trips or available on the boat. The coral is healthy in sections and fish density is high. This is the non-diver’s best in-water experience of the day.
Padar Island, viewpoint hike (1.5–2 hours)
Padar Island viewpoint is the photograph: three bays visible from a single ridge, each a different colour. The hike from the jetty takes 20–45 minutes depending on your pace and which viewpoint you’re aiming for (there are multiple levels; the highest is better but harder). The trail is steep. It’s worth it.
Timing note: If your day trip includes Padar, it’ll likely be mid-morning or afternoon rather than sunrise. The view is still good. If you specifically want Padar at sunrise (which is better), plan it for Day 3 morning instead (see below).
17:00–18:00: Return to Labuan Bajo harbour.
Evening: You’ve earned dinner. The waterfront restaurants work; alternatively, walk back from the harbour and find a warung one block off the main strip for a cheaper meal.
Day 3, Padar at Sunrise (Optional), Depart
If your flight is afternoon or later:
04:30: Wake up. You’re going to Padar Island for sunrise.
This requires chartering a speedboat (or joining a small group on an organised sunrise trip, some operators offer these). Departure from Labuan Bajo at around 04:30–05:00 gets you to Padar around 05:30–06:00 for a 05:50–06:15 sunrise depending on the month.
The hike up in pre-dawn darkness with a headtorch is atmospheric. The view as the sun hits the bays changes colour by colour over 20–30 minutes. This is a genuinely different experience from the daytime Padar visit.
Speedboat charter for a small group (4–6 people): IDR 800,000–1,500,000 for the boat. Split between the group. Ask at your guesthouse the evening before if they can arrange it or know a trusted speedboat driver.
08:30: Back in Labuan Bajo. Breakfast. Pack. Check out.
If your flight is morning:
Skip Padar sunrise and check out as required. Komodo Airport is 5 minutes from town by taxi (IDR 80,000–100,000 fixed price).
Variants
Diver version
Replace Day 2’s dragon trek with a full diving day. Rinca Island (45 minutes from Labuan Bajo) can be substituted for Komodo Island if you want to see dragons without the longer crossing, it’s a shorter boat trip and still excellent.
On a 3-day trip with diving, the typical approach is: Day 2 = dive day trip (Batu Bolong + Manta Point + one more site); Day 3 = dragon trek (Rinca) and Pink Beach, then depart afternoon.
Alternatively, a 2-night liveaboard departing afternoon Day 1 and returning morning Day 3 fits neatly into a 3-day schedule if your flights allow, this is the optimal diving structure.
Budget version
- Day trip: join a shared boat group (IDR 350,000–500,000 per person) rather than hiring private
- Accommodation: dorm in town centre (IDR 80,000–150,000/night)
- Food: warung breakfast and lunch (IDR 20,000–40,000 per meal), waterfront dinner once
- Padar sunrise: find a group via hostel noticeboard to split speedboat cost
- Total 3-day budget (excluding flights): approximately USD 130–160
What Do You Need to Know Before Visiting?
Entrance fees: Budget IDR 650,000 per person for Komodo/Padar entrance, IDR 900,000 for Rinca. See Komodo National Park Fees → for the full breakdown.
Komodo Island quota: The island has a daily visitor limit. Book your day trip with an operator who confirms they have a slot secured for your date, critical in July and August.
Seasickness: The morning crossing to Komodo can be choppy. Take preventative medication the night before if you’re prone.
What to pack for Day 2: Snorkelling gear (or rely on boat rental), sunscreen (reapply on the boat), a towel, water (2L minimum), cash for entrance fees if your operator doesn’t pre-pay.
For a Komodo-only 3-day version focused entirely on the park without Labuan Bajo day trips, see the 3-Day Komodo-Only Guide →.
If you have more time, the 7-day and 10-day itineraries add the overland Flores route, see 7-Day Itinerary → and 10-Day Itinerary →.
Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough time in Flores?
Three days is enough to see the Komodo National Park highlights, the dragon trek, Padar Island, and Pink Beach, but it doesn't leave time for the rest of Flores. Labuan Bajo is the base for 3-day visits. The overland part of Flores (Bajawa, Wae Rebo, Kelimutu, Ende) requires at least 5–7 additional days. If you only have 3 days, focus on doing Komodo well rather than rushing through multiple destinations.
What can I realistically do in 3 days in Flores?
Day 1: Arrive Labuan Bajo, explore the town, sunset from Puncak Waringin viewpoint. Day 2: Full day in Komodo National Park, Komodo Island dragon trek, Pink Beach snorkelling, and either Padar Island or Rinca Island depending on your boat route. Day 3: Padar Island sunrise hike (if not done Day 2), then departure. This covers the three main Komodo National Park highlights with time to do each properly.
Should I do Komodo as a day trip or liveaboard for a 3-day visit?
For a 3-day visit, a day trip is the more practical choice for most travellers, you spend nights in Labuan Bajo accommodation, keep costs lower, and have flexibility with your flight schedule. A liveaboard is worth considering if you want to see more remote sites, are a diver, or have Day 1 free enough to start a 2-night trip. A 2-night liveaboard departing late Day 1 or Day 2 morning and returning Day 3 morning can work if your flights allow. See [Day Trip vs. Liveaboard →](/blog/day-trip-vs-liveaboard-komodo) for the full comparison.
What is the best way to get to Labuan Bajo?
Fly from Bali (Denpasar) to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport, LBJ). The flight takes about 1 hour and runs multiple times daily with Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Batik Air. Prices range from IDR 400,000–900,000 one way. Book early, Labuan Bajo flights from Bali fill up quickly in peak season (July–August).
How much does a 3-day trip to Flores/Komodo cost?
Budget: USD 130–180 total (dorm, shared boat, local warungs). Mid-range: USD 200–300 (private room, decent guesthouse, private or semi-private boat). Comfortable: USD 350–600 (good hotel, private boat, nicer restaurants). This excludes flights. Komodo National Park entrance fees (IDR 650,000–900,000 per person) are the fixed cost floor regardless of budget tier.
