3 Days in Labuan Bajo: The Diver's Komodo-Only Itinerary

· labuan-bajo, diving, komodo, itinerary, liveaboard, 3-days

Quick answer: Three days of diving Komodo means either a 2-night liveaboard (8–10 dives across 6–8 sites, including remote northern sites) or two day-trip diving days from Labuan Bajo (2–3 sites per day). Liveaboards reach Crystal Rock and Castle Rock; day trips generally can’t. Budget IDR 1,500,000–4,000,000 per person for the liveaboard, excluding park fees.

This itinerary is for the diver who has 3 days in Labuan Bajo and wants to maximise time in the water. There’s no overland Flores here, no Bajawa or Wae Rebo or Kelimutu. That’s a separate trip. This is for Komodo, start to finish.

The most efficient structure for 3 days of diving. You depart Labuan Bajo Day 1 afternoon or evening, spend 2 nights sleeping on the boat anchored in the national park, dive 8–10 sites over 2 full days, and return morning of Day 3.

Day 1, Arrival, check-in, afternoon departure

Flights from Bali to Labuan Bajo arrive morning or midday. Most liveaboards depart 14:00–17:00 on the first day, this works well with an early morning flight.

Morning: Arrive LBJ airport, taxi to town (IDR 80,000–100,000, 5 minutes), check into your operator’s office, pay balance and sign paperwork.

Afternoon: Board. Pre-departure briefing from the dive guide covering the trip itinerary, site conditions, dive rules, and emergency procedures. Departure and short cruise to the first overnight anchorage (often Rinca or the outer islands).

First dive: A checkout/afternoon dive at a mild site near the first anchorage. Good for equalising post-flight and calibrating weighting in Komodo’s varying-density water.

Evening: Dinner on board. Night dive offered by most operators at an additional cost or included depending on the liveaboard package.

Day 2, Full day, core sites

Three dives, ideally covering north and south Komodo.

Morning dives:

Batu Bolong, The site most divers list as the highlight of Komodo. A submerged seamount rising from 40m to 5m below the surface. In good conditions, the walls are covered in hard and soft coral, and fish density is exceptional, schools of jacks and fusiliers, surgeonfish in the thousands, occasional reef sharks and whitetips, Napoleon wrasse. The current here can be strong; your divemaster times the entry to work with the flow.

Crystal Rock (north Komodo), A submerged pinnacle in the Gili Lawa channel. Known for consistent shark encounters (grey reef, whitetip, occasional hammerhead at depth), large schools of fish, and good coral coverage. Requires 2+ hours of boat travel from Labuan Bajo, accessible only on a liveaboard.

Afternoon dive:

Manta Point (Karang Makassar), if timing and season support it. December–April sees the most reliable surface feeding behaviour; in dry season, mantas are present at cleaning stations at depth. Your dive guide will know current conditions and make the call.

Surface interval: Lunch, briefing for next dive.

Evening: Second overnight anchorage, dinner, optional night dive.

Day 3, Morning dives, return

One or two dives before returning to Labuan Bajo for afternoon flights.

Castle Rock (north Komodo), Similar to Crystal Rock, strong currents, prolific fish life, shark encounters. Often paired with Crystal Rock on the same liveaboard trip.

Tatawa Besar, A gentler site good for a final relaxed dive. Excellent coral gardens, turtles, and reef fish without the intensity of the northern current sites.

Return to Labuan Bajo: 10:00–13:00 depending on the operator. Taxi to airport for afternoon flights.

Option B: Two Day Trip Diving Days

Better for: budgets, spontaneous planners, divers who prefer sleeping on land.

Day 1: Arrive, sort kit, book two consecutive day trips for Days 2 and 3.

Day 2: Day trip dive, typically departs 07:00, covers 2 dives at 2–3 sites (Batu Bolong + Manta Point is a common pairing), returns 16:00–17:00. Total in-water time: 60–80 minutes per dive.

The limitation: most day trip boats from Labuan Bajo cannot reach the far northern sites (Crystal Rock, Castle Rock) in a one-day return, the 2+ hour crossing each way consumes too much of the day. Some operators run longer-range day trips; confirm what sites are actually reachable.

Day 3: Second day trip. Vary the sites, ask the operator for different site selection on the second day (e.g. Rinca area sites, Tatawa, southern Komodo if conditions allow).

Day 3 afternoon: Rinca Island dragon trek on the return journey, many day trip boats stop at Rinca if it’s on the route. Confirm this is included or add IDR 900,000 entrance fee.

Cost comparison:

  • 2-night liveaboard: USD 150–370 all-in (site-dependent, includes 8–10 dives, meals, accommodation)
  • 2 day trips: IDR 700,000–1,200,000 per day trip + accommodation separately, often cheaper total, fewer dives, fewer sites

What Do You Need to Know Before Visiting?

Certifications: Komodo is officially accessible to Open Water certified divers, but several sites (The Cauldron, Crystal Rock in strong current) are Advanced Open Water or higher. Honest operators will tell you which sites are appropriate for your level.

DAN insurance: Non-negotiable. Nearest recompression chamber is in Bali (1.5hr flight). See Health & Safety → for detail.

Wetsuit: 3mm for wet season and north Komodo in dry season; 5mm for south Komodo in dry season where cold upwellings occur. See Best Time to Dive Komodo → for the full seasonal breakdown.

Nitrox: Available on most mid-range and premium liveaboards. Extends bottom time on the multiple-dive days. Nitrox certification recommended if you have it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough to dive Komodo?

Yes, 3 days gives you either a 2-night liveaboard (the ideal structure for diving) or two full day trip diving days from Labuan Bajo. A 2-night liveaboard typically covers 8–10 dives across 6–8 sites, including the top sites: Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Manta Point, and often a southern or northern extension. Two day trips from Labuan Bajo cover fewer sites (2–3 per day) but are cheaper and easier to arrange last-minute.

What is the best dive site in Komodo for a 3-day trip?

Batu Bolong is the site most divers prioritise, an exposed seamount with some of the highest fish density in Southeast Asian diving. Crystal Rock and Castle Rock (north Komodo) are the other major highlights. Manta Point for manta rays if the timing is right (December–April peak). A good 2-night liveaboard covers all of these.

Should I do a liveaboard or day trips for 3 days of Komodo diving?

Liveaboard for divers, almost always. A 2-night liveaboard gets you to the remote northern sites (Crystal Rock, Castle Rock, Gili Lawa) that are too far for day trips, keeps you closer to the dive sites, allows early morning and late afternoon dives, and reduces the 1.5–2 hour boat commute each way that day trips require. Budget day trips are a valid compromise if cost is the deciding factor, expect 2 dives per day trip rather than 3–4 on a liveaboard.

Can beginners dive Komodo in 3 days?

Yes, with caveats. Komodo has some of the strongest currents in Southeast Asian diving and is not ideal for freshly certified Open Water divers going to the advanced northern sites. However, several sites (Manta Point snorkel zone, Pink Beach, Tatawa Besar on gentle days) are appropriate for newly certified divers. Talk to your liveaboard or day trip operator about your certification level and dive count before booking, good operators adjust the site selection.
