Rinca Island
Rinca Island is the closest national park island to Labuan Bajo—around 1.5 hours by fast boat—and offers the most reliable Komodo dragon sightings due to its open savannah terrain and smaller visitor numbers. The Loh Buaya ranger station is the main landing point, where rangers lead trekking circuits through dragon territory. It is commonly combined with Padar Island on a single day trip.
Ask any experienced Labuan Bajo boat captain which island they’d take their family to and most say Rinca. It’s closer, cheaper to reach, and the dragon encounters are if anything more intense, the savannah terrain at Loh Buaya gives the animals nowhere to hide, and nowhere for you to either.
Komodo Island gets the fame. Rinca gets the dragons.
Loh Buaya Ranger Station
Rinca’s main visitor point is Loh Buaya (Bay of Crocodiles, named for the frequent mistaking of monitor lizards for crocodiles by early sailors), accessible from the beach in about 2 minutes. The station sits in open savannah with a cluster of trees and a small kitchen, both of which attract dragons throughout the day.
The trekking loops from Loh Buaya range from 1 km (short, 30 minutes) to 4 km (long, 2 hours). The short loop gives guaranteed dragon sightings near the station. The long loop covers open savannah, coastal ridges, and has better chances of seeing deer, wild boar, and water buffalo (all regular dragon prey) alongside the dragons themselves.
Tip: The dragon kitchen encounter is famous, some of Rinca’s largest dragons congregate near the ranger kitchen hoping for scraps. These are sometimes huge (2.5–3 m). Guides keep visitors at a respectful distance but the proximity is striking.
Rinca vs. Komodo Island: Which to Choose?
| Rinca | Komodo Island | |
|---|---|---|
| Boat journey | ~1 hour | ~2 hours |
| Dragons | ~1,300 | ~2,500 |
| Crowd level | Lower | Higher |
| Pink Beach | No | Yes |
| Manta Point | Nearby | Nearby |
| Terrain | Open savannah | More varied |
| Best for | Dragon close-ups | Pink Beach + full day |
Our recommendation: If you have one day and want guaranteed, intimate dragon encounters, Rinca. If you have a full day and want the complete Komodo National Park experience including Pink Beach, Komodo Island.
What Wildlife Is on Rinca Besides Dragons?
Rinca’s open savannah ecosystem supports a range of animals that share the island with the dragons, and most of them are also visible on the longer trekking loops.
Timor deer (Cervus timorensis): The primary prey species for adult Komodo dragons. Deer are common in the savannah and often spotted on the medium and long loops. They have learned to coexist nervously with the dragons.
Wild boar and water buffalo: Both prey species present on Rinca. Buffalo have been observed with dragon bite scars, wounds that, if not fatal immediately, eventually weaken the animal. Seeing a buffalo with a dragon nearby is not unusual on the long trail.
Short-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis): Common on Rinca, frequently seen in the trees near Loh Buaya. The macaques and dragons have an odd relationship: the monkeys steal food, the dragons occasionally take young macaques.
Sulphur-crested cockatoos, green junglefowl, Flores hawk-eagles: Rinca’s birdlife is excellent. A good pair of binoculars adds significant value to the longer loops.
Juvenile dragons: Young Komodo dragons (under 1 year) are striped and spend their first years in trees to avoid being eaten by adults. If you look up, you may spot one.
How Much Does a Rinca Day Tour Cost?
Honest cost breakdown for 2025-2026:
| Item | Shared Tour | Private Boat |
|---|---|---|
| Boat hire (Rinca only) | IDR 250,000-400,000/person | IDR 1,500,000-2,000,000 whole boat |
| Park entrance (Rinca) | IDR 900,000/person | IDR 900,000/person |
| Ranger guide | Included in entrance fee | Included in entrance fee |
| Snorkel stop | Sometimes included | Arrange with operator |
| Total per person | IDR 1,150,000-1,300,000 | Depends on group size |
The park entrance is the same regardless of how you get there. Rinca’s entrance fee (IDR 900,000) is higher than Komodo Island/Padar (IDR 650,000) as of 2025; the difference reflects the shorter boat journey cost savings.
What Is the Boat Journey Like?
The ride from Labuan Bajo to Rinca takes about 1 hour by speedboat, or 1.5-2 hours by traditional wooden boat (more comfortable but slower). The water in the Flores Sea is generally calm in the dry season (May-October) and can be choppy in the wet season.
The approach to Rinca is through mangrove channels, and the water turns from deep blue to shallower green-brown as you near Loh Buaya. Dugong (sea cows) are occasionally spotted in these channels. Keep an eye on the water on the way in.
Combined Rinca + Padar Day Tour
A popular alternative to the Komodo Island day tour is the Rinca + Padar combination:
- Morning: Rinca Island dragon trek (1-2 hours)
- Midday: Padar Island viewpoint (30-minute hike, iconic three-bay panorama)
- Afternoon: Snorkeling at Kalong or Tatawa Island
- Return to Labuan Bajo
This route is shorter in total boat distance and gives you two of the park’s major non-snorkeling highlights. Ask operators explicitly for a “Rinca + Padar” day tour, not all advertise it as a standard package.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Rinca and Komodo Island?
Both islands are inside Komodo National Park and home to wild Komodo dragons. The key differences: Rinca is 1 hour from Labuan Bajo (vs. 2 hours for Komodo Island), costs less in boat hire, and receives fewer tourists, making dragon encounters feel more natural. Komodo Island is larger and has Pink Beach. Most guides consider Rinca the better choice for those who want reliable dragon sightings without the group congestion on Komodo's main trail.
Are there Komodo dragons on Rinca?
Yes, approximately 1,300 Komodo dragons live on Rinca, making it one of the densest dragon populations in the park. The Loh Buaya ranger station is surrounded by open savannah and sparse trees that dragons favour for warmth. Sightings at Loh Buaya are extremely reliable, most groups see dragons within 5 minutes of arrival, often near the ranger station itself.
How do I get to Rinca Island?
By boat from Labuan Bajo, approximately 1 hour. Shared day tours that include Rinca are slightly cheaper than Komodo Island tours (shorter boat journey). Private boat hire to Rinca for a half-day is IDR 1,500,000–2,000,000. Many operators offer combined Rinca + Padar Island + snorkeling tours as an alternative to the classic Komodo Island day trip.
Is Rinca Island safe?
As safe as any Komodo National Park island with precautions. Licensed rangers accompany all visitors and carry forked sticks. In 2009 and 2017, incidents occurred when visitors strayed from their group, the standard safety guidance is to stay close to your ranger and not linger behind. Dragons at Loh Buaya regularly gather near the ranger kitchen (attracted by food scraps) and can be large and close.
Can I snorkel near Rinca Island?
Yes, the waters around Rinca are part of the same rich marine system as Komodo Island. The area between Rinca and the small islet of Nusa Kode (south of Rinca) has good reef snorkeling. Boat operators typically combine a Rinca dragon trek with snorkeling at a nearby site. Manta Point is also accessible from Rinca-bound boats.
Is the entrance fee the same for Rinca as Komodo?
The entrance fee for Rinca is IDR 900,000 per person; Komodo Island/Padar visits are IDR 650,000. If you visit both islands in one day, verify with your operator whether a combined rate applies. Most day tours visit only one island, choose based on your priority (Pink Beach → Komodo Island; fewer crowds + cheaper transport → Rinca).
